Hipsters at Home : A Night With Ken & Megan
Style / / Oct 12, 2017
What does sobriety look like? In our Style section, we look at different answers to this question through photo shoots with some of our most eye-catching sober friends!
Recently, we got the chance to hang out at home with one of our favorite sober couples- Ken and Megan! We chatted about food, inspiration, and got an intimate look at what a typical night at home looks like for them.
NSH: Thanks so much for letting us into your home! Can you please introduce yourselves for our readers?
Megan: Hi! I’m Megan! 23 years old, been sober a little over 2 years meow- my sobriety date is July 9th, 2015. I enjoy watching anime , eating, cuddling with “The Bandit”, and creating art. And I’m a Pisces!
Ken: I’ve been sober almost 4 and half years now, and sobriety has given me the opportunity to do what I love and pursue my passions! So I spend my time doing that, and giving Megan lots of kisses.
NSH: You guys have a beautiful place! What can you tell us about it?
Megan: We’ve been here about 3 months now, this is the first time either of us have signed a lease.
Ken: When I was living at my dad’s house, I didn’t plan on falling in love with Megan. Eventually we needed a place of our own to build dioramas and make collages. :3
Megan: Yah, we had been together about 8 months when we decided to move in with each other! It was scary but it just felt right for us.
Ken: It was a difficult decision for me to make because I was in-between jobs, and it was our first time signing a lease. And we only had been together for 8 months! It was a leap of faith , but it has turned into something even more beautiful than I could have imagined .
NSH: Who’s this little guy?
Megan: This is “The Bandit”! She’s 6 years sober, a Yorkie Chihuahua mix, and she’s been with me through the worst of my disease. She’s grown annoyingly fond of Ken, I can’t seem to get her off of him, they’re always hanging out together. I’m jealous, so I’ll write about it on my 10th step tonight.
Ken: Its’ true! Bandit does love me more LOL. But, what bandit does for us is that she makes us a family.
NSH: Where do you guys draw inspiration from for decorating your place?
Megan: Personally, I never liked warm colors, and there were a LOT of warm earthy tones in Ken’s room. I was apprehensive about merging our things together in one space, but the result ended up being the best thing for me, forcing me out of my comfort zone and providing a warmer, more grounding environment than I would have been able to create on my own.
Ken: When I see something that I like I buy it if I can afford it. In this room you will see some things that I like, and could also afford. I draw inspiration from the void.
Ken: We both really like Christmas lights and we both really like rugs, and things that are cozy that you would find in a fort.
NSH: Sweet piano!
Megan: This piano was a wedding gift to my mother, she recently handed it down to me as a family heirloom and I hold it dear to my heart! I have many memories of playing this piano with my mother. Her entrusting it to me, now that I have time sober, means the world to me.
Ken: Megan is awesome at playing this piano – she can play the theme from Howl’s Moving Castle! But she really shines when she freestyles on it; so creative and beautiful!
NSH: Do you guys watch shows together?
Ken: Megan introduced me to a lot of new anime that I have never seen before, and also a lot of animal documentaries! I never used to be into those, but now I’m fascinated with them.
NSH: You guys have a huge balcony! And you decorated it, too!
Ken: My favorite part of the patio is all our Christmas lights!
Megan: My favorite part is all the plants! Many of these used to live inside, but they are much happier out here!
NSH: Tell us about this lamp!
Megan: This is a gift from my best friend Caitlin! She found it at a thrift store and gave it to me while I was still in my disease. Every time I look at it I think of how much unconditional love and tolerance she’s had for me. Also, I just really love ORCAS!!!!
NSH: So Ken, you spend a lot of time working from home, yes?
Ken: Usually I like to work from coffee shops or libraries, but when I do work from home I turn the AC all the way up, put on some good music and sit in various positions around the apartment while I code. Usually Bandit snuggles up next to me, and at least once a day I think of how good I have it! What a gift!
NSH: Thanks so much for cooking a meal for us! Do you guys cook often?
Megan: We cook together 3 or more times a week, we try to as much we can. Its been something really special that we’ve shared together in our relationship. Nourishing one another.
Ken: Before I met Megan I used to go out to eat like every single day, but since I am such a people pleaser I was like “Yah, I’ll try your hummus and broccoli snacks”, and it ended up really growing on me. Also, I’ve developed a taste for fruit which is pretty amazing since I’ve been like horribly disgusted with fruit my whole life. Since I’ve been with Megan my eating habits have changed for the better, and I feel that eating better has helped me spiritually as well as physically.
NSH: What kind of meal are we eating tonight?
Megan: This is comfort food. We only make comfort food.
NSH: Megan, what is this!?!?
Megan: This is where I like to set intentions, through spell casting and other rituals. I also really enjoy praying here due to the energy that has accumulated in this space, I can really feel the presence of my higher power here. Magic is something I think we all do without even realizing, it’s intention setting through symbolic items and tools. It’s actually very practical and makes a lot of sense when you break it down.
NSH: That’s sooo cool!!! How do you guys typically end your evenings?
Ken: Lately we’ve been spending time connecting as soon as we get home, this has helped strengthen our emotional and spiritual bond. At night, we sometimes read from spiritual books, and trip out on them together. Sometimes when we are reading it really brings me into the moment, and it’s moments like those I have late at night with Megan that I live for.
Megan: Yeah, I think giving each other our time in the evening to connect and read with one another has played a key role in maintaining our sober relationship, we also spend a lot of time watching anime and dancing around, and taking Bandit on walks, and going in the jacuzzi. I think it’s important to prioritize fun.
NSH: Any parting words for our readers?
Ken: When I was first getting with Megan I shared in my home group about how much anxiety it was giving me, and a lot of people had things to say to me after the meeting. But one of the things that stood out the most to me was a little old lady with like 30+ years came up to me and whispered in my ear, “Ken, try not to take yourself too seriously, and just focus on making good memories with her”, I can honestly say I’ve tried my best to do this for the past year.
Megan: I want people to know, having a happy healthy, sober relationship is possible, even for those of us who have a long history of abusive, or toxic relationships. Through working a spiritual program, I’ve experienced some of the highest highs of my life by simply being present in the moment with Ken. I’ve been able to see him grow, and through him I’ve seen myself grow, more than ever before in my life. Find someone who teaches you about yourself, who will grow with you and create with you, who will endlessly support you in manifesting your wildest dreams.
